Sports-pitch infill and EU rules: what changes by 2031

The EU rules do not ban every artificial surface. They target the placing on the market of polymeric granular infill and make whole-life planning increasingly important.

Key date: 17 October 2031

After the transition period, granular infill for synthetic sports surfaces covered by the microplastics restriction may no longer be placed on the market. Existing pitches do not automatically become unlawful, but future infill availability becomes an operational risk.

Information matters already

From 17 October 2025, information and instruction duties apply to specified uses of synthetic polymer microparticles. Buyers should seek clear product composition, use guidance and measures that reduce environmental release.

Plan replacement, not only handover

For a pitch expected to operate for many years, compare systems by refill needs, recovery options, service and the cost of future transition. This is a technical and financial choice, not merely a turf-colour decision.
