EPDM and SBR: ordering the right surfacing materials

Start with the specified system rather than colour alone. A clear scope makes quotations comparable and deliveries easier to coordinate.

A material name is not a complete system

EPDM and SBR name different rubber types. In surfacing they appear in different components and assemblies, not as two universally interchangeable complete systems. Identify the component’s intended layer and use from the designer’s and installer’s documentation before comparing products.

Compare equivalent specifications

State material type, grading, application and required documents. Name the approved system and any substitution rules. Two EPDM products need not have identical properties. Confirm binder compatibility and quantities using the relevant instructions, not a generic online mixing ratio.

Performance belongs to the assembly

PN-EN 1177 addresses impact-attenuating surfacing tests. A bag of granules does not establish performance of the installed surface. Ask which tested assembly, thicknesses and conditions a performance statement covers. The substrate, construction and handover need separate agreement with the responsible professionals.

Use samples for colour decisions

A screen palette is a starting point. Compare samples with equipment, planting and nearby façades. Provide an annotated colour plan with areas for each field. If patterns are included, discuss their geometry with the installer before ordering. Agree batch identification for larger supplies.

Align delivery with actual work

Check substrate readiness, storage capacity and the stage when each component is needed. Follow the product’s storage and shelf-life instructions. Safe Ground supplies selected surfacing materials; include the specified system, quantities, colour plan and delivery requirements in your enquiry. An installer’s schedule is a useful starting point.

Before your next step

  • Identify the system and component.
  • Confirm binder compatibility.
  • Send areas and colours.
  • Agree documents and delivery.

Practical questions

Is the area in square metres enough for a quotation?

Area is a useful starting point but does not identify every component or quantity. Provide the agreed system and zone and colour breakdown. Relate quantities to system instructions and the installer’s plan. Send an existing material schedule rather than replacing it with one total area. Review substitutes against the complete specification, including binder compatibility. A similar colour or acronym is not proof of equivalence. Retain the approved variant and ordering decisions so each delivery can be identified unambiguously.
